Rezension aus Deutschland vom 24. April 2020
Während also die einen beim Anblick vor sich hin rostender Halden von Uralt-Autos in Wäldern in orgiastische Begeisterung ausbrechen, fragen sich nüchterne Betrachter, warum man die Natur so verschandeln muss. Gut, es ist die meist private Natur, da ist man frei in seinen Entscheidungen. Jedenfalls außerhalb von Deutschland. Obendrein erfährt man auch noch, dass hier manchmal nicht nur Vergessen, sondern pure Absicht im Spiel ist. Was um Himmels Willen bewegt Leute dazu, Autos im Wald zu stapeln? Und was treibt andere, sich darüber zu begeistern? Vermutlich ist das irgendeine Art, sich künstlerisch auszudrücken. Oder einfach nur Lust am Verfall. Oder etwas anderes, das in das Arbeitsgebiet von Psychologen fällt.
Niemand würde sich über irgendwelchen anderen Schrott im Wald und auf der Heide begeistern. Aber wenn es alte Autos sind, kommt Stimmung auf. Offenbar lösen verrottende Autos ähnliche Gefühle aus wie Mumien. Könnte man manche dieser Schrottkarren noch restaurieren, würden sie bestimmt viel wert sein. Aber über diese Phase einer noch möglichen Wiederbelebung scheinen die meisten Objekte der Kleinschen Begierde schon weit hinaus zu sein.
Klein ist um den halben Erdball gereist, damit er den automobilen Schrott sichten und danach effektvoll in Szene setzen kann. Letzteres ist ihm wirklich gut gelungen. Die Sterne entsprechen weniger meiner Anteilnahme an seiner Verrottungsfreude, sondern reflektieren viel mehr meinen Respekt, wie es ihm gelungen ist, diese spezielle Verklärung von Schrott in Bilder zu transportieren. Alle Achtung.
While looking at this illustrated book, some contemporaries may fall into a strange rapture. The author has already exemplified this. Other people, on the other hand, will rather wonder whether their minds might have fallen by the wayside somewhere. Because what you see again and again in this book is well-photographed junk, which is standing around in the landscape in a funny way or just like that.
So while some people burst into orgiastic enthusiasm at the sight of rusting heaps of ancient cars in the woods, sober observers ask themselves why nature has to be so spoiled. Well, it is the mostly private nature, there you are free in your decisions. At least outside Germany. On top of that, one also learns that sometimes not only forgetting but pure intention is at play here. What on earth makes people pile up cars in the forest? And what drives others to get excited about it? It’s probably some way of expressing oneself artistically. Or just a lust for decay. Or something else that falls into the field of psychologists.
No one would get excited about some other junk in the woods and on the heath. But when it’s old cars, there’s atmosphere. Apparently rotting cars trigger similar feelings as mummies. If some of these junk cars could still be restored, they would certainly be worth a lot. But beyond this phase of a still possible revival, most of the objects of Klein’s desire seem to be far beyond that.
Klein has traveled halfway around the globe to sift through the automobile scrap and then stage it to great effect. He has succeeded in the latter really well. The stars do not so much reflect my sympathy for his rotting joy, but rather my respect for how he has succeeded in transporting this special transfiguration of scrap metal into pictures. All my respect.

ich möchte Ihnen vielmals für die Übersendung Ihrer beiden Bücher Forest
Punk USA danken.
Ein erstes eher flüchtiges Durchblättern hat bei mir zunehmend Erstaunen
und anerkennende Überraschung über den Inhalt der Bilder ausgelöst. Hier
entsteht im Laufe langer Zeit eine Einheit von etwas, das auf den ersten
Blick scheinbar unvereinbar ist: Technik und Natur. Durch einen langen
Prozeß entsteht eine Art Symbiose, bei der sich die Natur eines
Fremdkörpers bemächtigt, welcher wiederum sich durch eigene Veränderung
und Vergänglichkeit in diese Symbiose ergibt. Anschaulich wird dies
besonders durch die vielen Detailaufnahmen.
Mit diesen Bildern ist Ihnen nicht nur eine großartige Darstellung dieses
Widerstreits Natur versus Autotechnik (die wir so nachhaltig mit unseren
Oldtimern zu erhalten suchen), der letztlich in einen neuen
Vereinigungszustand mündet, gelungen, auch die Darstellung eines
momentanen Zustands, der ständig im Fluß und in Veränderung ist, und
nicht zuletzt der künstlerische Anspruch sind Ihnen auf hohem Niveau
gelungen.
Die Vielfalt, Tiefe und Detaildarstellungen werden sich erst mit
wiederholtem Studieren zunehmend erfassen lassen. Und das mit jedem Mal

I would like to thank you very much for sending me your two books Forest Punk USA.
A first rather cursory leafing through them has caused me increasing astonishment and appreciative surprise about the content of the pictures. Here, over a long period of time, a unity of something that at first glance seems to be irreconcilable: technology and nature. Through a long process, a kind of symbiosis develops, in which nature takes possession of a foreign body, which in turn, through its own change and transience, results in this symbiosis. This becomes particularly clear through the many detailed photographs.
With these pictures you have not only succeeded in giving a great depiction of this conflict between nature and car technology (which we try to preserve so sustainably with our oldtimers), which ultimately leads to a new state of unification, but also the depiction of a momentary state which is constantly in flux and in change, and last but not least the artistic claim has been achieved on a high level.
The variety, depth and detail of the depictions will only be increasingly grasped with repeated study. And with each time a little more. I look forward to each time more.

Ihre beiden Bildbände haben wir fast die Sprache verschlagen, jetzt bin ich wieder in der Lage, mich auszudrücken:-).
Sensationelle Aufnahmen from God’s own country, aus meinem Sehnsuchts-Reiseland. Die vielen Bilder mit den amerikanischen Oldtimern vor berauschender Landschaftskulisse oder die bedrohlich wirkenden Wolken am weiten Horizont, ein Augenschmaus, der Emotionen weckt. Und die Überraschungen, wenn ich Motive entdecke, die ich selbst noch vor einen halben Jahr fotografiert habe; nur nicht ganz so toll gelungen wie Ihre Meisterbilder.
Beeindruckend sind auch Ihre Eckdaten, da ist wohl Geduld und Ausdauer gefragt. Und Spaß wird es wohl auch gemacht haben, stelle ich mir vor.
Your two illustrated books we almost lost the language, now I am able to express myself again :-).
Sensational pictures from God’s own country, from my country of longing. The many pictures with the American oldtimers in front of an intoxicating landscape scenery or the threatening looking clouds on the wide horizon, a feast for the eyes that awakens emotions. And the surprises when I discover motifs that I photographed myself only half a year ago; just not as well done as your masterpieces.
Your key data are also impressive, which requires patience and endurance. And it will have been fun, I imagine.
